Over the past few years, New Balance’s presence on the football pitch has confidently grown through its club sponsorships including that of FC Porto and LOSC Lille, and more importantly, its highly-specialized footwear for players.
This year, the brand’s focus has particularly been on its Furon v7 and Tekela v4 boots. First revealed last year, the Furon v7 has already undergone various collaborative makeovers such as the limited-edition pair by Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka. Meanwhile, the Tekela v4 has raised its profile through on-foot appearances by Tim Weah and Raheem Sterling across the 2023-24 season. However, it’s not just the high-profile associations that have given these boots a must-have edge, instead the technical features of the design.
Tailored to enhance speed and precision, New Balance’s Furon v7 is somewhat considered to be the perfect striker’s boot. At the base, it features a unique stud arrangement and a nylon outsole that allows for extended grip across the pitch. Though it’s the sneaker’s combination of an off-set lacing system set on top of a 3D tongue tab that comes together to give impact for any strike.
Similarly, the Tekela v4 is expertly designed to suit a particular type of play. This streamlined boot – which comes in laced and laceless editions – focuses on giving ultimate control of the ball. Allowing the player to stay light on their toes, it uses a thin yet durable casing on the upper. The shape of studs is also given a greater importance, molding them with an angle to optimize agile movement. Whilst laceless iterations typically see more sewn details to ensure support, New Balance engineers the Tekela v4 Laceless edition with no seams on the in-step to reduce pressure and provide an extra layer of comfort.
As New Balance continues to refine the classic football boot, it also elevates the overall look through contemporary colorways. The latest Tekela v4 models arrive in a sleek copper color while the Furon v7 details silver with copper accents, matching their futuristic, technical design.
