Roommates, Prince Harry is using his platform to encourage people to get involved with the fight against racial injustice, and speaks about his own ignorance to issues that black people face not only in America, but in the UK as well.
While speaking with a UK Black Lives Matter activist for British GQ, Harry admits that he did not know what unconscious racial bias was for many years, and attributes some of what he has learned to his marriage to Meghan Markle, as well as raising a bi-racial son.
“Unconscious bias, from my understanding, having the upbringing and he education that I had, I had no idea what it was. I had no idea it existed,” Harry admits. “And then, sad as it is to say, it took me may, many years to realize it, especially then living a day or a week in my wife’s shoes.”
Megan spoke openly in support of the Black Lives Matter movement back in June and since then, she and Harry have been working to bring awareness to fighting racism around the globe. Harry says that while there is no one to “blame” for having a bias, it is your own responsibility to educate yourself and do better!
“You can’t really point fingers, especially when it comes to unconscious bias,” he says. “But once you realize or you feel a little bit uncomfortable, then the onus is on you to go out and educate yourself, because ignorance is no longer an excuse.”
He continues saying, “Now in 2020 we have protestors of every color, every background, every religion, every age. This is a global movement. The train has left the station. If you’re not on it now, then get on it because there’s s much that we can do. And being a dad myself, the whole point in life, I guess, for me, is to try to leave the world in abetter place than when you found it.”
He also adds that it’s going to take a team effort to truly turn things around, but Harry believes that “the world is actually very much heading in the right direction.”
