Tems responds to view-blocking Oscars 2023 dress backlash

Now she’s blocking the haters.

At Sunday’s 2023 Oscars, Best Original Song nominee Tems faced backlash for wearing a dramatic white Lever Couture dress that blocked the view of the audience members seated behind her during the awards ceremony.

And on Monday, the 27-year-old Grammy winner shared her playful response to the drama.

“Uh Ohh!” Tems captioned a series of Instagram photos of herself wearing the couture creation from the Ukrainian label, which featured a structured veil that wrapped around her shoulders and formed a sculptural halo above her head.

She also tweeted photos modeling the over-the-top ensemble, writing, “Oops.”

Fans applauded Tems for hitting back at the haters and embracing her fashion choice.

“Block their view! 🔥,” one person on Instagram cheered.

“You’re way up there and I’m happy you been knew it❤️❤️,” a second person wrote.

“Block them love… They don’t deserve to see front😍😍,” another fan said.

“You looked beautiful 👸🏾,” another supporter wrote.

“Your view is the only view that matters 😍,” one more added.

The comments section of Tems’ Instagram post was filled with much more positivity than Twitter on the night of the Academy Awards.

The songstress inspired hundreds of savage memes and was ruthlessly dragged for wearing the view-obstructing garment.

“Imagine waiting your whole life to be at the Oscars and you end up sitting behind a stratus cloud,” one person tweeted at the time.

“Who has to sit behind that woman with the white veil,” another asked, calling Tems “rude.”

Others placed the blame on the designer of the towering dress.

“She looks stunning but perhaps they could have made the top bit detachable,” one person suggested.

“This dress was worth it 🔥but the stylist should do better next time. Don’t let people call out our Tems for being inconsiderate,” a netizen wrote.

“Her designers should have thought this through,” another added.

The songstress was nominated for Best Original Song for the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” track “Lift Me Up,” which was performed by Rihanna during the telecast.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Tems described her Oscars look as “outside the box.”

“Two years ago, I would’ve said no to this dress. But it’s my first Oscars — I am going to go all out. I really wanted to make the most of the day,” she said.

“The dress is also my way of celebrating my work and the people around me, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people that are rooting for me. This dress says ‘Yes, yes, I am here!’”
