Crafting her path in the world of fashion, Chinese-Canadian designer Izzy Du has developed a challenging understanding of form. Currently based in London, Du attended Central Saint Martins and graduated from the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Fashion Department in 2021. Following an impressive showing with her graduate collection, Du is now ready to showcase the future of her eponymous label, IZZY DU, building on the themes and focus of her 2021 prelude.
Leading with her first official main runway collection, dubbed “PROVENANCE,” Du presents a fanciful world defined by the astounding morphing of beings. Surrounded by natural landscapes, the contrasting hues place to focus on the external silhouette, supported by the internal structure of garments that envelope the wearer. Throughout the collection, the fledgling designer combines and manipulates a variety of material mediums to create a “dimensional contrast” with the negative space that exists between garments and the wearer. The opportunity developed offers a sense of “singularity and unrepeatable originality.”
Further cementing her place in fashion, Izzy Du is also launching “IZZY DU /LIFELINE,” a ready-to-wear line focused completely on the wearer. The entirety of the line is bolstered on the quality of fabrics, flattering for the body, integral color schemes, and comfort. Diverging from the main line, IZZY DU /LIFELINE’s defining elements include minimal finishings and trims, pure prints, and apex pattern making. Consciously considered, expert fundamentals of garment-making allow for the reduction of excess, creating technical wares for “everyone, no matter what style, age or gender.
Despite the diverging nature of the main runway collection and ready-to-wear line, the main textiles utilized throughout are cotton, silk, and a water-repellent, bi-stretch polyamide tech fabric that provides comfort, breathability, and versatility. Additionally, all puffers are filled with duck down and feathers encased in water-proof fabric made with 100 percent recycled polyamide. Pushing for the importance of collaboration in creation, Du tapped artist Pierre-Louis Graizon to create the evocative leather and felt face masks that complement the ranges.
“In a world of overstimulation and overproduction, I seek to bring back a sense of fresh wonder and possibility, I create to incite emotion, whether that be positive or negative, and I toil to preserve interstellar moments in tangible form.
‘PROVENANCE’ is my villain origin story. Totem beings in a pellucid world of magnificent landscapes and aerial beauty. This collection is about pure forms and fun shapes. It is about a mixture of beauty and ugliness with subtle humor. I love the word subtlety. It is what I had in mind when creating the main collection. At first glance, my work is not subtle. However, subtlety lies in the details. Fashion innately takes itself too seriously, with this collection I hope you see the humor in it as I do.”
