Ben Affleck denies having a bad time at the 2023 Grammy Awards and claims his viral unenthused face was due to host Trevor Noah catching him off guard for a skit.
“I saw [Noah approach] and I was like, ‘Oh, God,’” the “Argo” director told the Hollywood Reporter in a new feature published Thursday.
“They were framing us in this shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling.”
Just before the skit began, cameras captured Affleck having a conversation with his wife, Jennifer Lopez.
The “Gone Girl” star, 50, said he had been joking with the “Jenny From the Block” singer, 53, telling her, “As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor.”

“She goes, ‘You better f–king not leave,’” Affleck added. “That’s a husband-and-wife thing. I mean, some of it is, I’m like, ‘All right, who is this act?’”
In the skit, Noah, 39, pretended to be on the phone with his mom after Sam Smith’s controversial performance of “Unholy,” and quipped, “Mom, it wasn’t the actual devil. No, they were just dressed as the devil, Mom.”
At the time, the host was seated next to Lopez, who could be seen sternly patting her husband on the chest amid a brief chat.
After the moment went viral, everyone from fans to experts weighed in on the exchange.
A lip reader thought Lopez told her husband, “Look more friendly. Look motivated.”
A body language expert claimed the “Shotgun Wedding” star’s gesture was “reproachful” and was an attempt to show “control.”

However, Lopez tried to quiet the noise by taking to social media soon after the Grammys and sharing that she had the “best time” with her “love” at the awards show.

Affleck insisted to the Hollywood Reporter that he had a “good time” at the Grammys, although he did consider the award show his “wife’s work event.”

“My wife was going, and I thought, ‘Well, there’ll be good music. It might be fun,’” he said.
“At movie award shows, it’s speeches and, like, sound-mixing webinars. But I thought this would be fun.”
Affleck recognized, though, that he has gone to Hollywood events “pissed” or drunk “a bunch” in the past.

“Nobody ever once said I’m drunk. [But at the Grammys] they were like, ‘He’s drunk,’” the “Deep Water” star said.
“And I thought, that’s interesting. That raises a whole other thing about whether or not it’s wise to acknowledge addiction because there’s a lot of compassion, but there is still a tremendous stigma, which is often quite inhibiting.”
Affleck, who revealed in March 2017 that he went to rehab for alcohol addiction, concluded, “I do think it disincentivizes people from making their lives better.”
